Research Notes on Anal Cancer
Anal cancer is a rare type of cancer that occurs in the anus. The anus is a 1-1/2-inch tube at the end of your rectum through which stool leaves your body. Doctors have found ways to control anal cancer through radiation and chemotherapy, saving the anus and preserving normal bowel function for anal cancer survivors.
Fast Facts:
- According to the American Cancer Society about 4,600 people are diagnosed with anal cancer annually.
- Having human papillomavirus (HPV) can increase the risk of developing anal cancer.
- Symptoms of anal cancer can be mistaken more common conditions, such as hemorrhoids.
- Like most cancers, the earlier anal cancer is caught and treatment is begun, the better the prognosis.
