Research Notes on Amphetamine Addiction
Amphetamines can cause addiction in users that manifests with symptoms that are both psychological and physical.1 Long-term use of amphetamines can cause a mental disorder called amphetamine psychosis, which causes hallucinations, delusions, and paranoia.2 Amphetamines are medications that doctors prescribe to treat conditions such as ADHD, narcolepsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, and treatment-resistant depression.3

- Symptoms of amphetamine psychosis usually disappear a few weeks after this medication is discontinued.2
- Amphetamines are often sold and taken illegally.1
- The risk of an amphetamine addiction is increased when the user has depression, bipolar disorder, antisocial personality disorder, or a family history of drug abuse.1
