Research Notes on Amphetamines
Amphetamines are drugs originally created to treat hyperactivity (ADHD), sleep disorders (narcolepsy), and asthma.1 They are also used in the treatment of depression.2 These drugs work by increasing levels of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine in the brain.3 Some examples of these drugs are Ritalin, dextroamphetamine, and Benzedrine.1

- Amphetamines are often abused illegally as a stimulant.4
- Caution must be used when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. These drugs can cause blurred vision, dizziness, or restlessness.5
- Other drugs or treatment methods are often used due to the drug's potential for abuse or addiction.6
