Amoebic Encephalitis

Research Notes on Amoebic Encephalitis

Encephalitis is an acute inflammation of the brain. Amoebic encephalitis is caused by certain species of amoeba, specifically Naegleria fowleri, Acanthamoeba species, and Balamuthia mandrillaris. Typically, N fowleri produces primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), while the others cause granulomatous amebic encephalitis (GAE), which is a subacute or chronic infection.
