Amniotic Band Ultrasound

GuideWisdom™

This WisdomCard managed by: Tara Salamone

Amniotic band syndrome is a birth defect or disorder where the fetal body parts like arms, legs, or fingers are "banded" or trapped causing amputation, swelling, and the presence of constriction rings while still in the mother's womb. Also called amniotic band constriction, congenital constriction bands or rings syndrome, and amniotic deformity adhesions mutilation (ADAM). This syndrome is difficult to detect even with the use of an ultrasound as the individual strands are small and hard to see. They are only detected when the constrictions and swelling of the limbs are noticed and at that time it is recommended to have further tests to assess the severity of the constriction.
