Research Notes on Amniotic Band Syndrome
Amniotic Band Syndrome, or ABS, occurs when bands of amniotic membranes become detached from the amniotic sac and wrap around parts of the embryonic or fetal body or are inhaled by the fetus. These bands can then tighten and cut off the blood flow to the area below the constriction. Effects can range from mild cosmetic problems to congenital amputation and even fetal death.1
Fast Facts:
- ABS occurs in about 1 per 3000 pregnancies, including miscarriages.2
- Hands are affected in almost 90% of cases.2
- Clubfoot is seen in up to 25% of cases.2
- Cleft lip and cleft palate are frequently seen.3
- Groundbreaking fetal surgery has been successful in preventing or reducing damage in limited cases.4
