Ammonia is both a caustic and hazardous substance. It is found in small quantities in the atmosphere produced by the putrefaction of nitrogenous animal and vegetable matter.1 Ammonia poisoning can occur from swallowing, breathing in or touching either ammonia or products that contain ammonia in large amounts. It can be found in household cleaners, liniments and fertilizers. Some of the symptoms of ammonia poisoning include cough, wheezing, throat pain, vomiting and stomach pain.2
