Amitriptyline -- commonly sold under the brand name Elavil and Endep -- is in a group of drugs called tricyclic antidepressants. Amitriptyline affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced. Doctors prescribe it to treat symptoms of depression. Many patients have similar questions about the use of antidepressants.
