Research Notes on Amifostine and Pregnancy
Amifostine should only be used during pregnancy when the benefits to the mother clearly outweigh the risk to the fetus. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has listed amifostine as a category C medication. Drugs in this classification have usually not been well-studied in pregnant humans, but animal studies have shown an increase in the risk of birth defects when administered in high doses to pregnant animals.1
Fast Facts:
- Women who become pregnant or who wish to become pregnant should speak with a physician regarding the continued use of amifostine.2
- It is unknown if amifostine is excreted in breast milk. Breastfeeding mothers are generally advised to switch to bottle feeding if amifostine therapy is needed.2
- Amifostine is a generic form of the cancer-fighting medication Ethyol.2
