Research Notes on Amifostine Side Effects
As with any medication, there is a chance of experiencing side effects when taking amifostine. Nausea, vomiting, flushing, chills, fever, drowsiness, sneezing, and hiccups are possible side effects.1 Potentially serious side effects may include chest pain, chills, decreased urination, dizziness, fainting, twitching, numbness, red, blistered or peeling skin, seizures, severe stomach pain, shortness of breath, severe headache, vision changes, or fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat.2
Fast Facts:
- Some side effects may subside as your body adjusts to amifostine.3
- Seek medical attention if you experience symptoms of an allergic reaction such as rash, hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue.2
- Amifostine is also sold under the brand name Ethyol.
