Research Notes on American Board of Professional Psychology
The American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) is a non-profit corporation centrally located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The corporation is run by a Board of Trustees elected for a specific fixed term. In 1947, ABPP was incorporated with the aid of the American Psychological Association (APA). The primary function of ABPP is to certify psychologists in a specific specialty to ensure they are held to the proper professional standards. 1

- Areas of certification include child and adolescent psychology, clinical psychology, cognitive and behavioral psychology, counseling psychology, family psychology, forensic psychology, group psychology, rehabilitation psychology, and school psychology.1
- Originally called American Board of Examiners in Professional Psychology.2
- Within psychology, the practice focusing on one area supported by formal education, training, and experience is referred to as a specialty.1
