The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) is a non-profit organization. The American Board of Emergency Medicine is physician-led and is one of three leading entities which oversee physician certification in the United States. It's an umbrella organization for 24 of the 26 approved medical specialty boards in the United States.1

- The American Board of Emergency Medicine was incorporated in 1976.2
- In 1980, ABEM offered it's first EM certification exams.2
