Research Notes on Amelia
Amelia is a congenital defect characterized by absence of one or more limbs. The term can also be used to describe the number of missing limbs such as trimelia for the absence of three limbs and tetramelia if four limbs are missing.1
Fast Facts:
- It is caused by an error of the embryonic development between 24 and 36 days following fertilization.1
- Approximately 25% of all congenital limb defects are amelia.1
- It can be inherited as an autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, and x-linked trait.2
