Research Notes on Ambien and Pregnancy
Ambien (zolpidem) is used as a short-term treatment in patients with insomnia. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has labeled Ambien as a category C drug, meaning the effects of the medication have not been completely studied in pregnant women.1 Ambien has been known to cause low birth weight, fetal death, and birth defects in infants.2
Fast Facts:
- Breastfeeding should be avoided while taking Ambien, as it is known to pass through breast milk and causing lethargy, sedation, and affecting the eating habits in exposed infants.2
- As with any medication, consult your physician before taking Ambien if you are considering becoming pregnant.3
- Ambien should also be used with caution in patients with: history of sleep apnea, liver disease, kidney disease, asthma, myasthenia gravis, and depression.4
