Research Notes on Alzheimer's-Related Depression
Often, as a person with Alzheimer's realizes they are losing their memory, they will become depressed.1 Alzheimer’s disease may cause loss of appetite, apathy, poor sleep, and self-pity. These symptoms parallel those of depression. Knowing the signs can assist a caregiver or loved one in determining whether to target the person's depression or the illness causing these symptoms.2
Fast Facts:
- Other symptoms include expressing thoughts of sadness or losing weight.1
- A person with Alzheimer's may not be able to describe their feelings, or the way they feel, which can make diagnosis of depression in Alzheimer's disease difficult.3
- Although not as accurate, a caregiver may need to be consulted for information.3
