Research Notes on Alzheimer's Disease and Statins

Currently, some clinical trials have shown statins may reduce the development of Alzheimer's disease. Researchers speculate the cholesterol-reducing medication can reduce the amount of deposits caused by beta-amyloid protein.1 These proteins are believed to contribute to Alzheimer's disease.2 Alzheimer's is a degenerative disease which attacks brain cells and is the leading cause of dementia.3

Fast Facts:

  • Alzheimer's disease affects approximately five million individuals in the United States and is the seventh leading cause of death.4
  • A study in the Archives of Neurology showed those patients taking statins reduced the cholesterol byproducts believed to have a link with Alzheimer's by twenty-one percent.2
  • One current study in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry showed positive results in using statins and reducing new cases of Alzheimer's.5
