Research Notes on Alzheimer's Disease and Major Depressive Disorder
Scientists are not sure how Alzheimer's disease and major depressive disorder are connected. Some research has found that the Alzheimer's disease produces biological changes that can increase a person's genetic predisposition to depression. Other studies suggest that the depression itself may increase chances of developing Alzheimer's disease.1
Fast Facts:
- Alzheimer's disease can produce mild, moderate, or severe depression.2
- About 40 percent of people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease suffer from significant depression.3
- People with Alzheimer's often have difficulty expressing their feelings of depression. This makes depression difficult to diagnose.3
