Research Notes on Alzheimer's Disease and Functional Impairments

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia among older people. It is a brain disorder that seriously affects a person's ability to carry out normal daily activities.1 Nerve cell death and tissue loss occur throughout the brain causing it to shrink dramatically and affect nearly all its functions over time.2 A brain with AD has fewer than normal nerve cells with protein plaques and tangles surrounding the nerve cells, which block nerve cell signaling and communication.3 4 Individuals with Alzheimer's eventually lose their ability to communicate, recognize family and loved ones, and care for themselves.2

Fast Facts:

  • Memory loss is a common symptom of dementia.1
  • Because of the cognitive problems such as memory loss, it is important to create an environment that makes life easier and safer for people with AD.5
  • Symptoms of AD depends of the stage of the disease, from absence of impairment (stage 1) to late stage or severe Alzheimer's (stage 7) when basic cognitive functions cease.6
