The use of Alupent (metaproterenol) during pregnancy is recommended only when the benefits to the mother outweigh any potential risk to the fetus. No well-controlled human studies of Alupent have been conducted on pregnant women, but high doses of the medication in pregnant animals has resulted in an increased risk of miscarriage and birth defects. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has listed Alupent as a category C medication.¹
