Research Notes on Alupent and Pregnancy
The use of Alupent (metaproterenol) during pregnancy is recommended only when the benefits to the mother outweigh any potential risk to the fetus. No well-controlled human studies of Alupent have been conducted on pregnant women, but high doses of the medication in pregnant animals has resulted in an increased risk of miscarriage and birth defects. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has listed Alupent as a category C medication.1
Fast Facts:
- It is important to note that humans sometimes respond very differently to medications than animals.2
- Consult with your physician if you should become pregnant (or wish to become pregnant) while using Alupent.2
- Because Alupent is typically used as a rescue inhaler, most physicians will recommend that a pregnant woman continue to use the medication throughout pregnancy as the risk to the mother is too great without it.1
