Research Notes on Altitude and Emphysema
Emphysema is a chronic condition associated with damaged air sacs and shortness of breath. Although high altitude does not worsen the emphysema directly, persons with emphysema who travel or live at high altitudes may experience a greater degree of shortness of breath than those who live on low altitudes. This is due to the reduced levels of oxygen at high altitude.
