Research Notes on Alprazolam Dosage

There is no set standard dosage of alprazolam that has been proven to be effective in all patients. Your age, overall health, and the condition which your physician is attempting to treat will have an impact on the strength and dosing frequency of your medication. To treat anxiety, a typical starting dosage is 0.25 - 0.5mg taken three times each day. Panic disorder, also treated with alprazolam, is usually started at 0.5mg taken up to three times each day. Alprazolam is sold under the brand name Xanax.1

Fast Facts:

  • Alprazolam has also been approved to treat depression. It is frequently used off-label for the treatment of insomnia. Your physician will determine a proper dosage and dosing frequency for these conditions.2
  • A maximum of 4mg daily should be taken to reduce anxiety. Some patients may need up to 10mg daily in order to prevent panic attacks.3
  • Alprazolam may be taken with or without food, but it should be taken with a full glass of water or juice. It is important to take this medication at the same time each day in order to maintain a regular stream of medication in the blood.1
  • Do not stop taking alprazolam suddenly. This medication can become addictive, and you may need to be slowly weaned from its effects by a gradual decrease in dosage.1
