Alopecia is a medical term for hair loss or hair thinning.1 More than half of Americans experience hair loss.2 Anyone can experience hair loss -- men, women, and children.3 Hair loss can result from genetics, some medications, or a medical condition.3
Fast Facts:
- Forms of hair loss include: androgenic alopecia (male pattern baldness), traumatic alopecia (hair being torn out), drug-induced alopecia, and alopecia areata.2
- Male pattern baldness is normal in adult men.1
- Fungal infections (tinea capitis), similar to the ones that cause athlete's foot or ringworm can cause patchy hair loss.1
- A mental disorder called trichotillomania can cause a person to pull out his or her own hair.1
