The majority of fat in almonds is monounsaturated. A number of studies have shown monounsaturated fats, approximately 67% of the fat in almonds, lower overall cholesterol. While monounsaturated fates lower LDL "bad" cholesterol, they maintain HDL "good" cholesterol, thereby lowering the risk of heart disease by improving the overall ratio of the two types of cholesterol.
