Allopurinol is a oral drug. The brand name is Zyloprim. The primary use of allopurinol is preventing the recurrence of gout.1 It does this by stoping the formation of uric acid.2 Allopurinol can also be used to prevent kidney stones and drecrease levels of uric acid in cancer patients who receive chemotherapy.3
