Research Notes on Allergies and Sleep

Allergies can affect your sleep when your nose is congested. As your body tries to breathe from the nose at night, you begin to mouth breathe. This disturbs sleep over and over. The mouth dries out as well, causing irritation. Post nasal drip can cause you to cough and clear your throat through the night. If you inhale allergens you are exposed to through the night, you may become wheezy or have other symptoms such as headaches keeping you from sleeping.1 Allergy medications further contribute to daytime fatigue and grogginess, making daily functions hard for some people. Many adults never make the connection between their allergies and daytime sleepiness. They usually try to improve sleep habits instead.2

Fast Facts:

  • Nasal sprays, decongestants, and antihistamines can help you obtain better sleep.1
  • People with allergies have been found to have a more fragmented style of sleep, instead of deep sleep, which leads to very poor sleep quantity.2
  • The immune response to allergies disrupts the sleep cycle.3
