Research Notes on Hay Fever
Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, is an allergic reaction to indoor or outdoor airborne allergens, such as pet dander, pollen, or dust mites. The term "hay fever" was derived from the fact that it is most prevalent during haying season.1 Hay fever symptoms include itchy, puffy, watery eyes and a red, stuffy nose.2 Treatments for hay fever include over-the-counter medications such as antihistamines and decongestants, corticosteroids, and alternative therapies such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, and vitamin supplements.3

- Hay fever occurs most often from late May to the end of June.4
- Pollens of wind-pollinated plants are the leading cause of hay fever.4
- Ragweed is the most common hay fever causing pollen in the United States.4
