Aleve is in a group of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Aleve works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body. The major side effects of NSAIDs are related to their effects on the gastrointestinal system. Approximately 15% of patients on long-term NSAID treatment develop ulceration of the stomach and duodenum.
