Research Notes on Alcohol and Statins

People taking statin drugs should avoid excessive amounts of alcohol. Alcohol makes statin medications more toxic than than the drugs would be alone. Many people who develop liver problems while taking statins drink excessive amounts of alcohol. People taking statins also have an increased risk of memory loss if they consume large amounts of alcohol.1 Women taking statins should only have one alcoholic drink per day and men taking statins should limit themselves to two drinks per day.2

Fast Facts:

  • When small amounts of alcohol are consumed, LDL (or "bad" cholesterol) rises.
  • Alcohol is hard on the liver and reduces its ability to cleanse the blood. When it is busy processing alcohol, the liver is less able to process cholesterol.3
  • Some people develop high liver enzymes when taking statin medications.
  • Statin drugs may not be safe for people who have long-term alcohol problems.4
