Research Notes on Alcohol and High Cholesterol
Drinking alcohol can increases "good" cholesterol (HDL) but does not decrease "bad" cholesterol (LDL). Studies show that moderate alcohol consumption can raise HDL cholesterol levels by approximately 4 milligrams per deciliter.1 However, due to the other risks of alcohol consumption, the American Heart Association believes the benefit isn't enough to recommend alcohol for raising HDL.2
Fast Facts:
- Drinking too much alcohol raises blood pressure and triglyceride levels and may damage the liver and the lungs. Alcohol intake should not be used to prevent heart disease.3
- Drinking should be done in moderation: no more than one drink a day for women, or one to two drinks a day for men.4
- Regular exercise is a better way to help improve cholesterol levels.4
