Research Notes on Bipolar Disorder and Alcohol
Bipolar disorder and alcohol use often occur together in individuals.1 It is estimated that 30 to 60 percent of people with bipolar disorder also has a problem with alcoholism. This could be due to an attempt of the bipolar patient to self-medicate.2

- The relationship between bipolar disorder and alcohol is not well understood.1
- People with bipolar disorder also may suffer from a drug problem.2
- Recreational alcohol use might be okay if it does not effect the well being of the bipolar person.3
