Research Notes on Albuterol and Pregnancy

There have been no well-controlled studies of albuterol during pregnancy. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has listed albuterol as a category C medication, indicating that there is the potential for adverse effects on a developing fetus evident from animal studies. It is important to note, though, that humans and animals sometimes react very differently to the same medication.1

Fast Facts:

  • Animal studies have shown an increase in birth defects such as cleft palate when albuterol was administered during pregnancy.2
  • Should you become pregnant while undergoing treatment with albuterol, consult with your physician before you stop taking the medication. In some cases, albuterol may be recommended throughout pregnancy if the benefit to the mother outweighs the risk to the fetus.2
  • Albuterol is sometimes recommended in the treatment of lung conditions such as asthma, emphysema, COPD, and chronic bronchitis.2
