Research Notes on Air Pollution May Cause Heart Disease
Scientists at the University of Michigan have found that exposure to pollution in exhaust fumes raises a persons blood pressure which puts the heart at risk. Inhaling pollution for just over two hours can cause a large increase in diastolic blood pressure. High blood pressure can lead to heart attack, stroke, and other life threatening problems.1
Fast Facts:
- Previous studies have shown that bad air raises the risk of heart disease and stroke, but it wasn't clear how.2
- Particulates in pollution cause inflammation which stiffens blood vessels.2
- The study is published in the September 2009 issue of Hypertension.
