Research Notes on Agranulocytosis
Agranulocytosis is a condition which involves a severe and dangerous reduction in the number of white blood cells (leukopenia). Symptoms may include a sudden fever, sore throat and chills - indicative of a rapidly spreading infection. A number of medications have been linked to agranulocytosis, including methimazole, penicillin, naproxen and clozapine. If left untreated, the risk of death is high.
Fast Facts:
- Although the term 'agranulocytosis' is sometimes usedwith malignant 'neutropenia,' agranulocytosis is a more severe form of deficiency.
- The estimated frequency is 1 to 3.4 cases per million people per year worldwide.
- Can be caused by either rapid depletion of white blood cells due to infection or a failure of the bone marrow to produce neutrophils.
