Research Notes on Aging And Bone Mineral Density
As we age, our bone density naturally decreases. Bone mineral density is measured as the mass of bone matter per cubic centimeter of bone.1 This decrease in our later years results in an increase in hip and other bone fractures.2
Fast Facts:
- Exercise and proper nutrition can help to prevent bone mineral density loss as we age.1
- Measurements of bone mineral density are generally made from the hip or lumbar spine.1
- Bone mineral density is used to determine relative bone strength.1
- One study found that women between the ages 50-54 lose 1.3% of bone density per year.2
