Research Notes on Agent Orange
Agent orange is a weed killer. This herbicide was one of the chemicals the United States military used in the Vietnam War. It was used to kill the leaves on trees to make the enemy easier to see. Agent orange contains dioxin which is related to some types of cancer and other health problems.1
Fast Facts:
- Was sprayed from airplanes, helicopters, trucks and backpack sprayers.1
- The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs recognizes that some diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, Hodgkin’s disease, prostate and respiratory cancers as being associated with exposure to agent orange.1
- In 1996, legislation was passed to assist the children of exposed Vietnam veterans, if they were born with spina bifida.1
