Research Notes on Age and Diabetes Risk
Increasing age puts you at risk for type 2 diabetes. It is advised that you be screened by a doctor if you are over 45.1 Type 2 diabetes is on the rise, due to people living longer, and the risks that come with age. Typically, this form of diabetes is seen in people 40 years and older.2 As people become older, they tend to aquire the factors that increase their risk for diabetes. These factors include: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and a sedentary lifestyle.3
Fast Facts:
- Type 1 diabetes is also known as juvenile diabetes, and is often diagnosed before age 20.4
- Type 2 diabetes is also known as adult onset diabetes.2
- An increase in type 2 diabetes in younger populations is being seen due to obesity.2
- Changing lifestyle habits is very helpful for anyone with diabetes, but has been shown to be especially beneficial for people age 60 and over.3
