Research Notes on Afrin
Afrin is a brand name for the drug oxymetazoline nasal. Afrin is used to treat nasal congestion commonly associated with sinusitis, hay fever, allergies, and the common cold.1 This medication should not be used in children under the age of two.1 For more information, see the oxymetazoline nasal WisdomCard.
Fast Facts:
- Attempt to blow your nose before using Afrin for best results.1
- Because Afrin works by constricting blood vessels, it should only be used during pregnancy when there are no other available options.2
- You may experience a temporary burning, stinging, or dryness in your nose after using Afrin. It is also common to experience sneezing and a runny nose after taking Afrin.1
- Contact your physician if you experience nausea, dizziness, insomnia, tremors, unusual fatigue, or a change in heart rate.1
