Research Notes on Adverse Effects of SSRIs
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are antidepressant medications used to treat depression. A rare side effect of SSRIs is serotonin syndrome. This can be life-threatening.1 There has been some small incidence of suicide in people taking SSRIs under 18 years of age.2
Fast Facts:
- Most common side effects may include nausea, headache, dizziness, vivid dreams, and changes in sexual behavior.3
- Studies have shown that men taking SSRIs have an increased risk of DNA fragmentation in sperm.4
- SSRIs also may cause withdrawal symptoms as they are addictive. Always check with your heathcare provider before discontinuing any medication.3
