Long-term asthma treatment aims to decrease the symptoms of persistent asthma. One adverse effect caused by these medications is adrenal insufficiency (damages the body's ability to cope with trauma, surgery, and infection). Growth suppression, osteoporosis, skin thinning, elevated cholesterol, diabetes, cataracts, and muscle weakness are just some of the other possible adverse effects of long-term use of asthma medications.
