Research Notes on Adult Day Care

Adult day care is a planned program providing personal care to adults with physical or emotional difficulties.1 It was developed to assist families in taking care of their relatives instead of sending them to institutions such as a nursing home.2 These programs are provided by designated adult day care centers, which are non-residential facilities specializing in providing activities for these individuals.3 They aim not only to promote alternative care by enhancing socialization and self-esteem, but also to assist the families by allowing them to handle other matters while knowing that their relative is well taken care of.4

Fast Facts:

  • Adult day care can provide benefits to any older adult who needs supervision, personal or medical care, or even an extra socializing during the day.5
  • Day care centers can focus on providing care only for persons with Alzheimer's and related dementias or their services may be available for any disabled adult.3
  • According to the 2000 census, there are about 3,407 adult day centers operating in the United States.6
