Research Notes on Adult ADHD and Sleep
Researchers have found a link between adult ADHD and sleep disturbances.1 Adults with ADHD may find that their thoughts begin to race as soon as they lay down to sleep.1 Many adults with ADHD have said they get a burst of energy at bedtime, which can lead to spending more than an hour trying to fall asleep.1 Other sleep problems that adults with ADHD may suffer include having a restless sleep, difficulty waking, and intrusive sleep.1
Fast Facts:
- Sleep problems that are ADHD-related may be the result of medications prescribed to treat ADHD.2
- Sleep disturbances may also be the result of another disorder that co-occurs with Adult ADHD.2
- Adults with ADHD may receive medications such as melatonin and periactin to treat sleep problems.1
