Research Notes on Adult ADHD and Addictions
Research has suggested that adults with ADHD are more likely to have a drug addiction than adults who do not suffer from ADHD.1 It is common for adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to turn to addictions such as alcohol, marijuana, heroin, pain medication, nicotine, caffeine, sugar, cocaine, amphetamines, or eating disorders in attempts to settle their minds down.2 Many people who suffer from ADHD also suffer from anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, or obsessive compulsive disorder and some researchers feel that this makes them more likely to have a drug addiction.3
Fast Facts:
- Some people who suffer from ADHD have claimed that eating can temporarily calm ADHD physical and mental restlessness.
- Stimulants prescribed to treat ADHD have been abused by teens and adults with ADHD.1
- Impulsivity, a symptom of ADHD, may play into the increased risk of having a drug addiction.4
- For ADHD adults with a drug addiction, doctors usually recommend treatment with nonstimulant medications and visiting a mental health therapist.1
