Research Notes on Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma

Adenoid cystic carcinoma, also known as adeno cystic carcinoma (AdCC) is a very rare type of cancer. It most often occurs in the head and the neck, or in the salivary gland. It has also been found in the breast, the lacrimal gland of the eye, the bartholin gland, lung, brain and the trachea.

Fast Facts:

  • Second most common malignant salivary gland tumor (after mucoepidermoid carcinoma).
  • -- Very slow growing cancer, but has a history of aggressively invading surrounding lymph nodes and nerve fibers (perineural spaces).
  • 5 year survival rate is 70%, 20 year survival rate is 20%.
  • Primary treatment, regardless of body site, is surgical removal with clean margins.
