Research Notes on Addison's Disease and Pregnancy
Many women who are diagnosed with Addison's Disease are able to have a healthy pregnancy and birthing experience.1 If a woman has not been diagnosed, however, the pregnancy may be a bit more complicated as the symptoms associated with Addison's Disease (mainly nausea and vomiting) can be mistaken for morning sickness and the diagnosis may be delayed.2 In addition, the vomiting associated with pregnancy may interfere in the absorption of medications requiring physicians to adjust dosages and administration routes.1
Fast Facts:
- During delivery, hydrocortisone and saline injections are usually administered.1
- Fludrocortisone dosages may need adjusting if preeclampsia develops.2
- Medications for the treatment of Addison's disease are generally considered safe during pregnancy.3
