Research Notes on Addison's Disease Causes
Addison's disease is when the adrenal glands don't make enough of the hormone called cortisol. Addison's disease can start at any point in life. It affects women and men at about the same rate.1
Fast Facts:
- Addison's disease affects about 1 in 100,000 people.2
- Rare causes include chronic infections, tuberculosis, invasion of cancer cells, protein deposit, adrenoleukodystrophy or surgical removal of the adrenal glands.3
- Symptoms can include severe fatigue and weakness, loss of weight, increased pigmentation of the skin, faintness and low blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, salt cravings and painful muscles and joints.4
