Research Notes on Adderall and Sudden Death in Children


There may be a link between Adderall (amphetamine and dextroamphetamine) and sudden death in children.1 After the sudden death of twelve American children within a four-year span, Adderall's label was changed at the recommendation of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.2 The new label added a warning about giving Adderall to people with heart defects.1

Fast Facts:

  • The Canadian drug regulatory agency chose to suspend sales of Adderall after the deaths of the twelve children in 2004.2
  • The twelve children who died while taking Adderall were boys ages seven to 16 years old.1
  • Researchers have been unable to definitively link Adderall and sudden death in children.1
