Research Notes on Adapin and Pregnancy
Adapin, a tricyclic antidepressant, is typically not recommended for use during pregnancy.1 The drug, a medication prescribed to treat conditions such as bipolar disorder and depression, has not been studied in pregnant women. Most physicians recommend using a different antidepressant medication in order to avoid any abnormalities in fetal development which may arise due to the use of Adapin.1
Fast Facts:
- It is currently unclear whether Adapin passes through the breast milk of nursing mothers. Your physician or therapist may recommend that you switch to bottle feeding your baby while you undergo Adapin therapy.1
- If you should become pregnant while taking Adapin, consult with your physician, but do not stop taking your medication. You may need to be weaned from Adapin therapy, and abruptly stopping the drug can be dangerous.2
- Adapin is a brand name of the generic drug doxepin.1
