Acute viral encephalitis is an inflammation of the brain caused by a virus. One of the most common ways to contract this illness is through mosquito bites. Viral encephalitis closely resembles the flu and may last up to 2-3 weeks. Treatment is always under the care of a physician in a hospital environment as this is a life threatening disease. Treatment of viral encephalitis is mostly symptom relief, although in the case of the herpes virus, antiviral drugs may be used.
