Acute retinal necrosis is a type of retinitis (inflammation and damage of the retina) caused by viral infection. It is often caused by the viruses varicella-zoster (chicken pox virus), herpes simplex, and cytomegalovirus (CMV). Its symptoms include blurred vision, eye pain, and light sensitivity. Acute retinal necrosis symptoms can be treated by medications, or surgery when retinal detachment occurs.
