Research Notes on Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia

Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow and is a subtype of acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). With APL, there is an abnormal accumulation of immature granulocytes called promyelocytes. Signs and symptoms of APL include fever, fatigue, weight loss or a loss in appetite, shortness of breath with exertion, anemia, unusual bruising or bleeding, persistent infections and bone pain or joint pain.1

Fast Facts:

  • APL was first recognized as a distinct disease in 1957.2
  • The treatment for APL is unique; most patients are treated with all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA) in combination with chemotherapy. ATRA is a form of differential therapy that activates the retinoid receptor RAR and causes promyelocytes to mature, which deters them from proliferating.2
  • 75-80 percent of patients are expected to be long term survivors with the treatment of APL using the combination of chemotherapy and ATRA.3
